I've been lurking in this community for years but I can't sew to save my life so I just drool over the pictures... but I teach grade 10 and grade 11 Career Explorations and I was thinking of doing a unit on fashion/sewing.

So I need your help, dear hip seamstresses!

I plan to have my students practice a few stitches and then make a skirt or a pair of pajama/sweatpants. Any good stitching videos/images/websites that you suggest? Free skirt/pant patterns? Fabric suggestions? Or general disclaimers of first timer mistakes we will undoubtedly do?

On the sideline they'll also be creating a "lookbook"/portfolio of photos of clothes they like from different seasons and styles. I'll ask them to write brief paragraphs explaining what defines a season and how to build a look.

Let me know what you think! Any imput is great.

Thanks!!!

Cotton flannel [04 Jan 2010|11:54am]

sew_hip

[childthursday]
I bought some lovely 100% cotton flannel on sale yesterday. I plan to use it to make a dressing gown, so I wanted something washable, which this claims to be. But now I'm having second thoughts. I figure it will shrink, but I'm worried about it felting like wool does. How should I wash the fabric? Can I put it through the dryer? Any special suggestions for pre-treatment?

fashion design process [04 Jan 2010|06:18pm]

[anniejackson]
I'm writing an article on the steps that are taken in designing a fashion collection. Not sourcing a manufacturer, pattern development, etc...just the actual designing part.

I wanted to present readers with alternate sources of information so I was looking for articles to include as links. Only problem, I can't find any. The closest I can find is this video series which is vague and doesn't cover the whole process: http://www.ehow.com/videos-on_7575_designing-fashion-collection.html

I've been really surprised by this and am convinced someone, somewhere, on some random blog or forum must have written about this.

Do you know of any links?

I posted this only to the sew_hip community because I'm not sure where else to post....or if this was even the right place to begin with...please suggest if you have ideas.

tube knit? [03 Jan 2010|02:37pm]

sew_hip

[spacefem]
I've been looking everywhere for stretchy tube knit fabric and I'm starting to think I made it up in my head or something. What kills me is that I bought it two years ago at hancock, just before halloween. And now it's extinct or something, the store people act like they've never heard of it.

Here's what I know about it:

1) It's solid color knit fabric
2) It's about 14" wide
3) It's stretchy in that ribbed sort of way. People use it for sweatshirt bands and cuffs.
4) It's a seamless tube... so you can cut it lengthwise and have 28" wide fabric, or not... we used to make no-sew stretch skirts and tube tops with it before.
5) It's cheap. Like $2 a yard.

Am I a crazy person, knowing that this stuff exists? Am I calling it the wrong thing? Any suggestions for how I could find it online? I tried the joann and hancock websites, I come up with nothing. I'm having a hard time googling it because anything with the word "knit" in it comes up with pages about knitting.

I sometimes feel like fabric stores exist solely to provide fleece for throw blankets these days.

Designers Nexus [03 Jan 2010|07:55pm]

[anniejackson]
Is anyone familiar with the DesignersNexus.com website? I have been trying to contact them through the contact information provided on their site several times over the past few months to offer free advertising on my site because I like what they offer and want to make it available to people. However I have not receive any replies and now I am starting to wonder if they are still in business. I have links to this site in articles like "companies we support" and now I am worried that people will follow a link there, pay money for a product and get nothing in return.

If you know about this website,  do you know if they are active or has the business been abandoned?

Adjustable back question? [03 Jan 2010|11:52am]

I'm starting to think of costumes to start making for the convention season, but right now I'm 7 months pregnant and really don't have much of an idea as to what my size will be exactly postpartum. I was thinking of making all of my costumes with lace-up style backs instead of zipper so that they can be adjusted a little bit. I don't really know how to do it though. Anyone know how I might be able to?

I want to turn an afghan into a quilt.

I'm thinking that if I sew backing directly onto the afghan first I can then quilt as usual, with fiberfill and another layer of backing for the actual back. Does this sound feasible?

Hey everyone! Happy New Year!

I'm currently at the beginning of a month-long winter vacation from school. In order to keep my (menial!) sewing skills from atrophying, I've decided to undertake a few big projects. One of them being the Hand and Lock Embroidery Prize.

If you haven't heard of this international competition you can read everything you need to know about it here. Essentially, it's an international competition on hand embroidery and embellishment of fabric. There are two categories of prize winners - student for people in college/graduate school/ technical school and open - for everyone else.

If you're interested in embroidery you should check out the competition! Enter! The prize money is really great and you get to travel to London. Even if you're not interested in entering the competition it might be cool to check out the site and see what's going on in the world of embroidery today!

New member Hi [02 Jan 2010|06:10pm]

[lindenfoxcub]
Hi; I've been sewing since my mom showed me how to thread a sewing machine when I was five. In 2008, I threw together my own wedding dress on an 80 year old singer featherweight:

wedding pic :) )

I also made a white cotton sundress last summer. I never imagined a cotton sundress looking slinky, but this one fits gorgeous.

At the moment I'm working on a winter coat, taking a simplicity driving coat pattern and adding a lining of satin and thinsulate (I live in a very cold climate.) It's taken forever (probably be finished by now if I hadn't done any altering.

So there's my hi, and my vain showing off.

Books of 2009 [01 Jan 2010|12:28am]

hipsterbookclub

[gruyere]
As I did last year, rather than pollute the community with a crosspost of my whole list, I'll simply link to my own post: clicky clicky click.

This year's Top 10 list includes a book that almost made me want to read poetry, two riotously funny debut novels (one a thriller, one a very long, very bitter letter), a half-century-old nearly-lost masterpiece, a quietly wonderful saga of two brothers, a super new novel by a stalwart of the literary scene, an awfully funny and strange novel about a family, and two collections of short stories: one a strange and shattering debut, the other all the more amazing for the fact that I'd never even heard of the author before despite that this is her seventh book or so.

Men board shorts patterns? [31 Dec 2009|08:05pm]

[rgrthat]
[ mood | happy ]

Happy New Year everyone <3

I need a pattern suggestion for mens board shorts.  Something for a male in his 20's-30's so thereby hip, trendy, stylish.  They ideally would hang down to the knees, somewhat of the "surfer styled" look.  I can do it with or without pockets, either way works fine for me.  I would prefer something with a drawstring and I will be adding velcro inside for additional closure.

This style is what I'm looking to accomplish.

Suggestions are welcome, I've been having one heck of a time finding a pattern for this project.  Your help is appreciated. <3
